Sunday, July 13, 2008Press Release
Imposant is proud to announce the launch of UptimeInspector.com, a stunning new Web 2.0 application, which is able to monitor servers and websites for reliability and performance.
UptimeInspector monitors target servers and websites from several locations distributed worldwide, with periods ranging from one minute to one hour, and sends an alert to the server administrator when failure is detected. This alert can be by SMS, email, instant messaging systems, RSS, or a phone call. UptimeInspector is capable of testing the following TCP/IP servers: PING, SMTP, SSH, Telnet, POP3, IMAP4, MySQL, HTTP(S) and FTP. It extends a common monitoring approach by adding server-specific tests to the simple connection test. Thus it is not only the downtime state that is reported, but also server malfunctioning, invalid web page contents, broken files, an incorrect SQL query response, and other problems. In addition to TCP/IP server monitoring, UptimeInspector can search for a mail server IP address in DNS blacklists, and report if a server is listed, and therefore banned from mail delivery to particular destinations. For webmasters UptimeInspector offers a Full Page Test, which includes a keyword presence or absence check, a check for broken links, verification of page or file size, load time measurement, MD5 checksum calculation, SSL certificate expiration, and other checks besides. Access rules can be set up to use the proper authentication method, web agent and referrer string, GET and POST parameters, options to load images, frames, scripts and CSS files. UptimeInspector provides an easy-to-use web interface to set up monitoring targets, well-written documentation, and examples that make it easy to set up even complex monitoring tasks. UptimeInspector pricing is flexible, and depends on the actual monitoring tasks performed. There is no subscription, or minimum monthly fee. Is all this starting to sound interesting? If you want to try out UptimeInspector, a fully functional fourteen day free trial is available. Visit http://www.uptimeinspector.com for details. Friday, June 13, 2008GET and HEAD method handling issues
With the help of our customers we discovered that GET and HEAD requests are handled in an unpredictable fashion by some servers.
Some background: GET and HEAD are HTTP 1.1 request methods described in RFC2616 (section 9) , by RFC definition the difference between these methods is: "The HEAD method is identical to GET except that the server MUST NOT return a message-body in the response. The metainformation contained in the HTTP headers in response to a HEAD request SHOULD be identical to the information sent in response to a GET request. This method can be used for obtaining metainformation about the entity implied by the request without transferring the entity-body itself. This method is often used for testing hypertext links for validity, accessibility, and recent modification. " According to this definition, we use the HEAD method to check external links on a web page (full page check). Unfortunately, some web servers return "Not Found" or other errors for HEAD requests. This may be the result of improper server configuration or unusual behavior required from the web server. We are not going to change all HEAD requests to GET, because this would necessitate the download of a great number of large images and files just to check their availability. Fortunately, this issue is detected immediately and settings may be adjusted, (see "Solution" above), when the monitoring target is being set up. Today UptimeInspector is proud to announce the launch of our Search Engine Rank Monitoring. Now our customers can get a notification once their website is removed from, or appears on, a search engine index , or has an increase or decrease in rank.
Currently UptimeInspector supports Google and Yahoo as the most valuable search engines, and we will soon be including Microsoft's Live.com. We have focused our efforts on providing website owners, webmasters and SEO managers with the facility to receive alerts when a website's ranking in relation to important keywords is changed. For example, if your website moves from the top ten, or is completely lost from the index. This also means we do not need to provide bulk tools for search engine optimization. Currently the checking period starts from 1 hour upwards, and soon we will have the facility to check how the rankings are changing in real time, and to adjust the minimum period to correspond to this value. UptimeInspector is not a search engine abusing tool. Labels: monitoring, search engine rank, seo Monday, August 6, 2007New Monitoring Location in Pennsylvania, USA
