July 07: UptimeInspector Competitor Comparison
Intro
UptimeInspector is high above the most of its competitors, however there are highlights we should implement to stay at the technology top.
Competitors included
Host-Tracker, HyperSpin, IPPatrol, UpTrends, WebSitePulse
Short Review: Host-Tracker
Simple HTTP monitoring service. Some HTTP basics included: GET/POST, keywords. Uses simple centralized architecture, non-scalable by feature set. Acceptable for undemanding customers
Pros:
- GTalk alerts supported
- Excellent SEO
- English, French, Spanish, Russian localizations
Contras:
- No port monitoring, no advanced monitoring
- Non-scalable architecture, cannot perform advanced tests due to shared hosting account limitations
|
Short Review: HyperSpin
Simple TCP/IP monitoring service. Provides more protocols than Host-Tracker
Pros:
- Reseller Program with branding feature
Contras
- Not reliable. Easily hangs on properly constructed tests, so customer may not get an alert on error
|
Short Review: IPPatrol
Medium-level monitoring service with advanced port monitoring for particular protocols (e.g. MySQL is monitored using DB access libraries)
Pros:
- 2 way SMS
- Monitor groups (dependencies)
- Traceroute on error
Contras
- 3 locations all in the UK
|
Short Review: Uptrends
Well-featured monitoring service. Adds interesting "competitors" concept, allowing to compare different targets (e.g. own and competitive)
Pros:
- "Competitors"
- Comparison reports
- RSS notifications
Contras
- Only 5 and 10 minute intervals
|
Short Review: WebsitePulse
The most advanced from above. WebsitePulse is old, advanced and hard to use.
Pros:
- Transaction monitoring
- E-mail roundtrip monitoring
- URL, trap alerts
Contras
- Fixed plans
- Hard to navigate web interface
